Charly Wegelius has announced that he will retire racing after the Giro di Padania this week. Wegelius has been a professional since 1999 and was best known as a domestique particularly in the mountains of the Giro d'Italia which he completed seven times, with a best overall finish of 29th place.
Wegelius has not had any individual victories as a professional but was part of three team time trial winning teams. One of the times he came closest to winning was earlier this year in the Vuelta a Asturias where Wegelius was the last survivor of a breakway but was passed just a few hundred metres from the summit of the Alto del Naranco and finished third on the stage.
