Fabian Cancellara has won the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) after breaking away from Tom Boonen on the penultimate climb of the day. The pair had split away from the field on a previous climb and were being chased by a trio including David Millar as well as Phillipe Gilbert and Björn Leukemans.
Cancellara made a big effort on the Muur climb as simply powered away from Boonen who had no response. By the top Cancellara had got enough of a gap to be able to time-trial to victory over the final 15km. Boonen had to be content with second place. Millar also suffered on the Muur and dropped back to the main chase group alongside compatriots Roger Hammond and Geraint Thomas.
Phillipe Gilbert won the two-man sprint for third place whilst Hammond came third in the bunch sprint to finish seventh overall. Cancellara's win is his third Monument victory as he previously won Milan-San Remo in 2008 and Paris-Roubaix in 2006.
