Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne

Mark Cavendish has won Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne today, the first British victory in this long running race on the first weekend of the Belgian season. The race always seemed likely to come down to a sprint finish and the Sky team came to the front of the peloton to sweep up the breakaway with 5km to go. From then on Sky kept control despite challenges from Lotto-Belisol and FDJ to setup Cavendish perfectly for the sprint. The Manx rider got the jump on his rivals and won comfortably despite a late challenge from Yauheni Hutarovich.

Tiernan-Locke wins again!

Jonathan Tiernan-Locke has won the final stage of the Tour du Haut-Var and with it taken the general classification victory. The result follows hard on the heels of his Tour Méditerranéen win last week.

Tiernan-Locke attacked at the start of the penultimate causing a small lead group to form but was not able to make a decisive break. A slight descent before the final climb up into the village of Fayence allowed a group of four riders to get away including Julien El Fares and Julien Simon. They were unable to build a large advantage and as the climb began Tiernan-Locke was once again the first to attack. He quickly caught the breakaway and was able to take what looked like a comfortable win.

The stage victory was also enough to give Tiernan-Locke his second overall race win both of the year and of his whole career.

Stage and overall win for Tiernan-Locke

Jonathan Tiernan-Locke has won the final stage of the Tour Méditerranéen and with it the overall title. Tiernan-Locke broke clear of the peloton on the climb of the Col du Corps de Garde to take the victory in style.

The Col de Garde was being used as a replacement for Mont Faron which was unrideable due to snow. However this change in finishing climb did not deter Tiernan-Locke from his plan to attack, which he carried out to perfection managing convincingly pull away from the field where his closest competition came from noted mountain climbers Dani Navarro and Stefano Garzelli.

Tiernan-Locke will now be full of confidence heading to the Tour du Haut Var, another stage race which should suit his characteristics.

First win of season for Cavendish

Mark Cavendish took his victory for Sky and as world champion in Qatar today. On a typically windy day on the Qatar peninsula the peloton was split into many small groups. Many of the top sprinters managed to make the lead group and it was race leader Tom Boonen who lead out the sprint. He had though gone too early considering the strong headwind and Cavendish was able to nip past to take the win. Adam Blythe also made the lead split and finished in 11th place.
