Wiggins wins time-trial to secure Romandie title

Bradley Wiggins has won the hilly final time-trial of the Tour de Romandie to take the overall win. Wiggins started the stage in second place, nine seconds behind Luis Leon Sanchez. However the Spaniard would not be a factor in the battle for the general classification win. The strongest challenge came from young American Andrew Talansky, who set the time to beat in Crans-Montana. Wiggins suffered a slight mechanical problem when his chain came off but remained calm and was able to beat Talansky on the stage by less than a second.

The stage win gave Wiggins the overall victory by 16 seconds. It is his second World Tour ranked stage race vicory of the year following on from Paris-Nice in March, and his third in total as he also won the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré last year.

Blain wins Rutland-Melton Classic

Franchman Alexandre Blain of Endura Racing won the Rutland-Melton International CiCLE Classic today to continue his team's strong start to the season. The race was run in very wet conditions with the route having to be changed to avoid flooding and very few riders finishing. A leading group of 12 riders were able to escape and Blain made many attempts to breakaway. Eventually he got away and quickly built up a commanding lead which enabled him to take the win by almost two minutes. Behind the chase had broken up into small groups and Canadian Jamie Sparling took second place ahead of the leading British rider, James McCallum.

A day of many seconds for Russell Downing

Russell Downing has finished second overall in the Circuit des Ardennes after two second places on the final day of the race. The first stage of the day was a 25km long team time trial won by the Itera-Katusha team. Endura Racing finished in second place 19 seconds back. The result moved Downing into second place overall behind Marek Rutkiewicz of CCC Polsat who had been part of the winning break on the previous stage.

The second stage of the day was won by Stephane Rossetto, the sole survivor from a breakaway group. Behind Rossetto the race was split into pieces with both Downing and Rutkiewicz making it into the first chase group. Downing won the sprint for second place and took four bonus seconds but it was not enough to prevent Rutkiewicz from taking the overall victory.
