Bradley Wiggins came within a second of winning the opening of Paris - Nice, a 9.4km individual time trial from Dampierre-en-Yvelines to Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse. Gustav Larsson set the leading mark early before the expected rain arrived. Wiggins set off third last and had to take care around the corners in the wet and slippery conditions. Despite this he came very close to setting the best time, suggesting that in better conditions he could have won comfortably.
