Mark Cavendish won the first stage of the Tour of Missouri, a circuit race around the city of St. Louis. This was not a straightforward victory for Cavendish as lead-out man George Hincapie hit a pothole approaching the finish. This forced Cavendish to follow the lead-out of Thor Hushovd, who he was able to get around to take then win. Argentinian JJ Haedo came through to take second place.
Cavendish also leads the Tour overall due to the bonus seconds awarded at the finish.
