The first stage of the Tour of Britain took place today - a 173km journey from Scunthorpe to York. A two rider break consisting of Thomas De Gendt and Martin Mortensen was clear for most of the day. The pair built up a twelve minute lead but could not hold of the peloton lead by Katusha and Columbia-HTC.
In the closing kilometres Garmin-Slipstream took over the head of the race with Bradley Wiggins working to lead out Australian sprinter Chris Sutton. Sutton was able to take advantage and hold off Michele Merlo and British riders Ben Swift and Russell Downing to seal the victory.
Result
1. Chris Sutton - Garmin-Slipstream
2. Michele Merlo - Barloworld
3. Ben Swift - Katusha
